The Wandering Reader

About me

Hi! I'm Heather — and if you found your way here I'm guessing you love books, you love travel and you probably have a running list of places you want to go and stories you want to read before you get there. Same.

I'm a travel agent based in Portland Oregon which means I spend a lot of time thinking about where people are going and how to make the getting there feel as magical as the destination itself. Somewhere along the way I also started building Elsewhere — a free travel planning app that does all the heavy lifting so you can spend less time on spreadsheets and more time actually daydreaming about your trip.

When I'm not planning someone else's adventure I'm usually deep in a book with a cup of something warm, convincing myself that one more chapter is completely reasonable at this hour. My reading life is gloriously unpredictable — one week I'm swept up in a slow burn romance set on the Italian coast, the next I'm completely consumed by a historical mystery that has me googling things at midnight. I read whatever calls to me and I'm never sorry about it.

Because here's what I really believe — the best trips start with a book. A story that makes a place feel familiar before you've ever been there. That makes you want to walk the streets, eat the food and breathe the air of somewhere completely new.

That's what The Wandering Reader is all about.

Pack light. Read freely. Wander always.

Planning a trip can feel overwhelming — and that is exactly why I became a travel agent. If you love the idea of Elsewhere but want a little more hands on help I am here for that too!

Whether you are dreaming of a Disney trip a European adventure or somewhere you have never even considered before I can take all the tabs all the research and all the second guessing off your plate so you can get straight to the good part — actually going.

Let's plan something amazing together!

"Every month I share an honest book review paired with a dream destination inspired by the story — plus real travel guides practical tips and the occasional confession that I absolutely judged a trip by its cover and was completely right to do so.

Pull up a chair — the reading list is long and the world is wide!
